The Minister of Communications, Honourable Haruna Idrissu has commissioned the NVTI ICT Connectivity Project at the Vocational Training and Rehabilitation Institute, Biriwa, at an impressive ceremony.
The Ministry of Communications and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) have established Information and Communications Technology Centres at all the 37 NVTI Institutes across the country. Each of the centres was supplied with 20 computers and accessories as well as overhead projectors , scanners , air-conditioner, and one year internet service; all costing GH¢75,000 per Institute.
In his inaugural address, the Honourable Minister for Communications re-iterated the demand by the New Educational Reforms which mandates that Information and Communication Technology becomes an integral part of vocational and technical education and training. He said it was for this reason that the government was setting up such centres in schools.
The Minister stated that ICT holds the key to the future and as such any trainee graduating from school without skills will remain uncompetitive on the job market.
On his part, the Honourable Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr. Enoch T. Mensah remarked that there are several persons without jobs, while there are jobs without skilled persons to take. This he said, stems from the fact that the youth are not being directed to acquire the required skills in the country. He called for emphasis to be laid on vocational training.
The Honourable Minister implored the trainees to apply themselves diligently to their training.
The Director of the NVTI, Mr. Stephen Bismark Amponsah in a short speech stated that the world today is moving fast and ICT is one area that as a training institution would not be toyed with. He said when ICT became one of the subjects to be taught at the vocational training institutions, the NVTI was faced with the challenge of equipping all its institutes with ICT facilities and therefore the project came as a succour. He thanked the Ministry of Communication and GIFEC for coming to the aid of NVTI. He assured them of regular maintenance of the equipment.
Other personalities who graced the occasion included, Honourable Kofi Attor, the Administrator of GIFEC, Honourable Baba Idrissu, Member of Parliament for Yendi and the Municipal Chief Executive of Mfantseman West Municipality, Mr. Kweku Hayfron.
