The Institute conducts the following training programmes:
a) Centre Training
b) Informal Apprenticeship
c)Instructor and Master Craftsman Training
i) Centre Training
The Institute operates thirty eight (38) vocational centres dotted all over the country training the youth in some twenty-eight (28) skill areas.
1. Entry Requirements to NVTI Centres
Entry to the centres is generally open to persons with the following qualifications:
2. Course Duration
The Course is designed for 4 years leading to the Certificate II Certificate. An Application Form is obtainable at each Centre. The training year starts in January. Entrance examinations are conducted between October and December each year with each Centre setting its own date for the examination.
3. Uniform
School uniforms are provided by the trainees in the chosen colours of each Centre.
4. Tools
Tools depend on each course and are on loan for use at the Centres. Any loss which is found to be due to negligence on the part of a trainee is paid for by him/her.
5. Tests
Trainees are eligible to sit for the following Test Grades during and after 4 years training:

ii) Informal Apprenticeship
The Apprenticeship Department has the responsibility of planning, organizing and conducting Apprentice training for shop, floor and middle level craftsmen in the informal sector for industry and self-employment nationwide.
Its other functions are to:

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE FOR ASSOCIATIONS AND WORKSHOPS
1. Application Forms are obtained at the Apprenticeship Department of NVTI Head
Office, Zonal Offices and the Regional Coordinators’ Offices.
2. The completed forms accompanied by two (2) passport sized photograph each of the
Master Craftsman and the Apprentices should be returned to the above stated offices.
3. Membership Identity Cards are finally issued to the Master Craftsman and the
Apprentices.
Activities
• In collaboration with Master Crafts Persons prepare action plan for the training of apprentices.
• Provide assistance in the selection of tools, equipment and training materials for informal apprenticeship.
• Recommend appropriate training for Master Craftsmen.
• Maintain and update a register of all Master Craftsmen and their workshops.
• Organise courses and seminars for Master Crafts Persons who have been registered to upgrade their skills.
• Supervise and monitor the skills training programme at the workshops to ensure quality training.
• Award certificates to apprentices who complete training successfully.
• Arrange training programmes for apprentices at the NVTI Centres.
• Periodically carry out training needs assessments in new areas for apprentice training.
• Monitor the effective utilization and safety of tools, equipment and training materials.
• Put in place the infrastructure for informal apprenticeship.

STANDARD REQUIREMENTS FOR MASTER CRAFT PERSONS
GUIDE TO WORKSHOPS/GARAGES/CENTRES REGISTRATION
Must satisfy the following standard requirements:
• Must have completed an apprenticeship and have served in the trade for a minimum of five (5) years.
• Must be able to demonstrate competence in the trade (OBSERVATION)
• Must be literate. (At least must be a holder of middle school leaving certificate (MSLC) or basic Education Certificate (BEC) or can read and write.
• Must have the workshop registered with a relevant Trade Association and be accredited by NVTI/GES or advised to affiliate with a Trade Association.
• Workshop should be spacious for free movement of Apprentices and Trainers.
• Workshop should have adequate storeroom for tools, office and toilet facilities.
• Workshop should have first aid kit and safety equipment.
• Workshop should have vehicular access.
• Workshop should always be engaged with work. (OBSERVATION)
• Master Craft Persons who do not satisfy all the above requirements may be granted special permission by six months of commencing Informal Apprenticeship Training Programme.
• Must operate a Bank Account with any recognise Bank in Ghana.

c) Instructor and Master Craftsman Training
c) NVTI EQUIPS NIGERIAN YOUTH WITH SKILLS
The national Vocational Training Institute (NVTI) has started a skills training programme for some Nigerian youth.
The Nigerians, who number 212 are to be taken through a six-month intensive and practically oriented training programme in Welding and Fabrication. The training is taking place at our institutes located in Kokommlemle, Accra; Winneba, Biriwa, Takoradi, Abetifi and Kumasi.
Besides practical training, the trainees will be taken through some theory in Mathematics, Communications, and Entrepreneurial Skills. Successful trainees would be awarded Proficiency 1 Certificatates.
This is part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Institute and the Learning Resource Nigeria Limited representing the Nigerian government to train over 1,000 Nigerians in about 13 vocational skills.
